Lieti, protams, noder mantotā daļa no mirušā vīra bagātības.

It’s been just a month since Anna regained her freedom and death of Moriarty but already her and Sherlock’s life is once again in danger and both of them are forced to run. The fact that Anna is pregnant doesn’t make the situation easier, especially knowing who’s the father.

The reason why they have to run and hide is Colonel Moran, one of Moriarty’s closest henchmen. In his revenge and attempt to gain some profit from Anna’s pregnancy, which for Anna herself seems more like a curse although I would call it as something else since the child protects her (sort of) until he or she is born.

Anna and Holmes isn’t just hiding in some hole and staying alive, while doing that they are also trying to figure out the motivation behind Moriarty’s plan to develop biological weapon and also to acquire hard evidence against Moran so he would be locked away for a very long time.

Luckily in this fight Anna and Holmes don’t have to be alone. Without the help from Mycroft and not only from him they couldn’t cope. Of course the part of Moriarty’s riches that Anna inherits helps out a lot.

In this last series book we find out how big Anna’s observational skills really are, so big that she isn’t worse than Sherlock; both of them are excellently supplementing each other and their relationship dance still cracks a smile here and there. Who knows maybe next year I’ll read Sherlock’s adventures by another author.

As I hoped Garret takes some part in the events but only momentarily. I was a bit surprised how easy he got forgive to Anna and understands. But this and few other minuses to the story are forgivable and understandable. :D I would gladly read other stories with Anna’s participation.

Maybe for some this story might feel a little too slow.

Mana recenzija/My review

Cerams noslēdzošā grāmata viesis skaidrību gan par šo, gan vēl šo to.

The first trilogy’s book The Devil’s Grin ended with Anna’s and Sherlock’s success but not for 100%. Because, although those who conducted the experiments and research and other small fish were caught, the big ones got away.

The Fall starts with Anna’s kidnapping from her hiding place and with that we are introduced to professor James Moriarty, who is just as observing and intelligent as my previously mentioned two main characters, but at the same time he is very different. Conscience isn’t a factor that might hinder him to reach his goals.

It seems that creating vaccine for cholera was just some first steps in much bigger game. Because the reason why Anna now is a hostage is that Moriarty wants that she would help him create biological weapons making victory in a battle and war just that easy. His suggestion to start with bacteria of Plague shows how much hasty, irrational and bold Moriarty sometimes can be.

Being imprisoned by Moriarty changes (also in the physical way) Anna step by step in a way that she probably wouldn’t go herself. Both characters are all the time playing the cat and mouse game between each other trying outmaneuver the other and not losing the control along the way.

Besides the main plot there are also few minor like Anna helping cabman and maid to start their relationship. Thereby involving and demonstrating other characteristics of side characters. If in the first book Sherlock’s brother Mycroft was only mentioned by name then in this one he was allowed also a little action.

Albeit the ending is similarly successful (at the same time a bit sad) as in case of cholera, a feeling that not everyone important enough was captured.

And about the series overall right now, then after the prequel I hoped that Garret would be used more or at all! Also I don’t think that the Villain from that same book wasn’t Moriarty. Hopefully the concluding book will clear this and other questions.

Annelie Wendeberg – The Devil’s Grin (Anna Kronberg Thriller #1)

20362495

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

At the turn of the 19th century, bacteriological research has made a tremendous leap. When epidemics were still untamed and claimed thousands of lives, Pasteur and Koch isolated deadly bacteria to develop vaccines. Biological warfare was but a small step away…

In Victorian London’s cesspool of crime and disease, a series of murders remains undiscovered until a cholera victim is found floating in the city’s drinking water supply. Dr Anton Kronberg, England’s best bacteriologist, is called upon to investigate and finds evidence of abduction and medical maltreatment. While Scotland Yard has little interest in pursuing the case, Kronberg pushes on and crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes. The detective immediately discovers Kronberg’s secret – a woman masquerading as a man in order to practice medicine – a criminal deed that could land her in prison for years to come. But both must join forces to stop a crime so monstrous, it outshines Jack the Ripper’s deeds in brutality and cold-bloodedness.

Warning: This book contains foul language, non-explicit sex-scenes, explicit dissection scenes, violence, and considerable female power.

Mana recenzija/My review

To laikam varēs uzzināt vien, ja ķeršos klāt nākamajai triloģijas grāmatai. : )

At the first glance a case where a body infected with cholera is found floating in reservoir next to Thames, but it is enough to spark the interest in Anna and in the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. In literature this is my first meeting him, so I’m not sure how much similar he is to the original, or not. And maybe that’s for the best. A little better acquaintance with Holmes I have by watching Elementary. I guess there was only one moment where there was a glimpse into his relationship with narcotic substances, if I wouldn’t know about that maybe I would have missed it.

During the day Anna Kronberg becomes a male doctor and one of the best bacteriologists in England – Anton Kronberg. The time which she lives forces her to masquerade. To shock Anna, Holmes is capable to see who she is in just few moments. But Anna also has more than good observing skill and that at the same time scares and fascinates Holmes because she not like others can see more and look deeper into him. Liked how the two characters interacted.

Garret is another character that shows up only momentarily. If I wouldn’t have read prequel I’m not sure if would have understood their relationship and how he knows Anna.

During the investigation both Anna and Holmes get themselves in life threatening situations. The big theme of the book, as the hint from victim, is cholera witch in densely inhabited parts of the city (mostly the poor) takes a lot of lives. In the name to find a vaccine some doctors are willing to sacrifice few unlucky ones that no one will look for.

Together with Holmes Anna uses her status to discover what happened to the man before he drowned and met the river. But what if that destroys Anna’s skillfully formed second life? To find out that I guess I have to read the next book in this trilogy. : )

Nurse Anna helps to those who others would rather imagined nonexistent. Without her the life for poor would be even harder than it already is. Her knowledge she also give to inhabitants of brothels and also to some cracksman. Not everyone could do what she does! But Anna Kronberg has her secrets that she would prefer no one ever finds out about. I’m just gonna say one of them contains identity change.

Garret O’Hara, a skillful cracksman, stands out in the crowd with his height and bulk. On one night he shows up in Anna’s life like from clear sky with a gunshot wound, and that is the beginning of their association. Their relationship doesn’t feel artificial, but just right. POV changes between them (and also few more other characters have the chance), so the reader can find out how both Anna and Garret feels about each other. It should be considered that Garret isn’t just any simple minded burglar, but with good taste also in literature, of course his reading choice is limited by the houses he gets into.

The time and place which the story takes place has its relative charm – 1885, London.

More thriller and mystery is added when one of the prostitutes few days after Anna’s help after the client hurt her in the previous day goes missing and later is found dead. In the prequel there are only few hints about the murder’s identity, even his real name is not revealed. Since Anna is interested in about the missing girl and who hurt her, also police doesn’t care if there is one less prostitute alive or not, Garret with his friends takes the matter in their hands.

The last chapter reveals that maybe not everything went according to plans. There isn’t even any different possibility thinking about what to read next! – definitely The Devil’s Grin.

After a while I have read very good story. Where was I sooner?! :D I have to agree to the last sentence in the synopsis that this book has some graphic episodes and isn’t for the youngest audience, but I don’t know about the faint-hearted.
