Svens Kuzmins – Pilsētas šamaņi

128750

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Cormac McCarthy – The Road (audiobook)

6288

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

A searing, post apocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Cita sižeta līnija ietver Gvendolinu, Sofiju, The Lying Cat un The Brand (The Will māsa) viņu centienos atrast īpašu pretlīdzekli, lai glābtu The Will.

***************************************

The recent events with robot Dengo who seeks the help from the wrong people thereby endangering those near him, by kidnapping Hazel (also Alana and Klara) and the royal robot baby at least for this moment unites characters, Marko and Prince Robot IV, that at different circumstances would be enemies which creates few unusual moments.

The other story line involves Gwendolyn, Sophie, The Lying Cat and The Brand (sister of The Will) as they try to find a cure for The Will. In this and also in the two previously mentioned story lines some serious topics are discussed, like about family, sacrifices and selflessness we are ready to for the people that are important to us.

In this volume there are plenty of shocking moments, and mostly they involved a dramatic passing of some character. Which is one of the reasons (without doubt also the art) why also Volume 5 receives the max rating from me. Now that I have read the last available volume out there I can’t wait for the sixth volume to come out! : )

Andy Weir – The Martian

18007564

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars’ surface, completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he’s alive — and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark’s not ready to quit. Armed with nothing but his ingenuity and his engineering skills — and a gallows sense of humor that proves to be his greatest source of strength – he embarks on a dogged quest to stay alive, using his botany expertise to grow food and even hatching a mad plan to contact NASA back on Earth.

As he overcomes one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next, Mark begins to let himself believe he might make it off the planet alive – but Mars has plenty of surprises in store for him yet.

Grounded in real, present-day science from the first page to the last, yet propelled by a brilliantly ingenious plot that surprises the reader again and again, The Martian is a truly remarkable thriller: an impossible-to-put-down suspense novel that manages to read like a real-life survival tale.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

Mark Watney wakes up with an antenna in his body and all alone on the red planet. But the circumstances don’t allow him to just sit around and be terrified but forces this botanist and engineer to think all the time how to stay alive as long as possible, preferably until Ares 4 arrives.

I completely believed to what happened in The Martian. When I recently saw a documentary about the difficulties to send humans to Mars I had just two advices 1) read The Martian and/or 2) ask Andy. :D

Not only Mark’s POV was interesting (his attitude and humor did crack some smiles and few laughs but no ROFL moments) but also how everyone else reacted on Earth. Mass media and people show a massive interest and concern about Mark’s future, different organizations, the government and other involved in the universe’s exploration are willing to help NASA (also internally)not only with finances but also with their own personal time (forgetting what a normal sleep means). Andy Weir’s scenario in this case is positive but I can imagine that that might not always be like that.

A warning that further it’s revealed if Mark survives or not!

It’s actually better that the book ends with Mark getting safely to Hermes and that there isn’t even a little about him back on Earth. Probably there would be more than one that wouldn’t be happy about the spent money just to save one person and would somehow express it. However it might be fun to find out how Mark adapts from being the last person on a planet being back to Earth, of course he would have practice time on Hermes. I can imagine that at least at the beginning Mark would receive huge attention from press and have some popularity.

Simplifying, the story is about how one man against all odds and reasonable chances survives unimaginable difficulties and sometimes his own thoughtlessness and stays alive.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Starp citiem tēliem obligāti jāizceļ The Lying Cat.

***************************************

The life as fugitives and worrying every day that they might be discovered certainly isn’t easy, much more so when you have to think about your daughter. Marko and Alana are proving that, but at least they have a help from ghost Izabel and Marko’s mother Klara, and it seems that the current planet they are on isn’t that bad also. The constant tension creates conflict situations between Alana and Marko and the consequences to them might be surprising.

This volume for sure has the most blood, violence and gore in it so far! In the Robot royal family (those with heads like TV) there’s a new family member born. Unfortunately for them the war has created some dangerous and defective minds; the same character is a new player that might endanger the main heroes of this story.

An honourable mention in this volume is The Lying Cat. It would be interesting to find out what kind of animal Friendo is.

Daniel Keyes – Flowers for Algernon (audiobook)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

With more than five million copies sold, Flowers for Algernon is the beloved, classic story of a mentally disabled man whose experimental quest for intelligence mirrors that of Algernon, an extraordinary lab mouse. In poignant diary entries, Charlie tells how a brain operation increases his IQ and changes his life. As the experimental procedure takes effect, Charlie’s intelligence expands until it surpasses that of the doctors who engineered his metamorphosis. The experiment seems to be a scientific breakthrough of paramount importance–until Algernon begins his sudden, unexpected deterioration. Will the same happen to Charlie?

Mana recenzija(pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Būtiski defekti no audzināšanas (mātes), pat gudram esot.

***************************************

Charlie Gordon even as an adult can’t remember or do the simplest things and his behavior is like a small child. It’s clear that Charlie has some sort of mental illness, but instead of receiving proper help many ridicule and in the best case call him an idiot and at the same time feel smarter besides him. While all that Charlie wants is to receive affection, love and friendship from the family and others and to be like everyone else.

In a way help comes from doctors who promise to make Charlie smarter (of course hoping to get famous) and as a proof they can show Algernon, a very smart mouse that can beat any task that is presented to him. If before the operation Charlie is angry towards the smart mouse then after the relationship between two geniuses start to get friendlier. As Algernon begins to show concern creating symptoms their relationship can be described as touching.

How well described is Charlie’s regression is even more moving. You can only admire how Charlie is capable to forgive and not be angry against everyone who laughed at him while he was dumb. Interestingly that when Charlie got smarter and smarter he was hated for the opposite because now all those people next to Charlie felt inferior. I liked how Charlie’s rise and fall was depicted.

I just can’t understand the attitude from Charlie’s parents, especially the mother, which some years after her ‘’normal’’ daughter was born literally threw him out of home. And the father who tried to defend him wasn’t much better. These two and many other characters are capable to create anger against them! Like, how could they!

Charlie’s memories (mostly from childhood) were fascinating; and the romance stuff were quite interesting – not too much or out of place. Essential defects from the upbringing (mother) even him being smart.
