Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

The shocking new thriller from the king of southern gothic.

When he was a prosecuting attorney Penn Cage sent hardened killers to death row. But it is as mayor of his hometown – Natchez, Mississippi – that Penn will face his most dangerous threat.

Urged by old friends to restore the town to its former glory, Penn has ridden into office on a tide of support for change. But in its quest for new jobs and fresh money, Natchez has turned to casino gambling. Five fantastical steamboats float on the river beside the old slave market like props from Gone With the Wind. But one boat isn’t like the others. Rumour has it that the Magnolia Queen has found a way to pull the big players from Las Vegas. And with them comes an unquenchable taste for one thing: blood sport, and the dark vices that go with it.

When a childhood friend of Penn’s who brings him evidence of these crimes is brutally murdered, the full weight of Penn’s failure to protect this city hits home. So begins his quest to find the men responsible. But it’s a hunt he begins alone, for the local authorities have been corrupted by the money and power of his hidden enemy. With his family’s life at stake, Penn realizes his only allies in his one-man war are those bound to him by blood or honour.

Brian K. Vaughan, Niko Henrichon – Pride of Baghdad

381350

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

From one of America’s most critically acclaimed graphic novel writers – inspired by true events, a startlingly original look at life on the streets of Baghdad during the Iraq War.

In his award-winning work on Y THE LAST MAN and EX MACHINA (one of Entertainment Weekly’s 2005 Ten Best Fiction titles), writer Brian K. Vaughan has displayed an understanding of both the cost of survival and the political nuances of the modern world. Now, in this provocative graphic novel, Vaughan examines life on the streets of war-torn Iraq.

In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions escaped from the Baghdad zoo during an American bombing raid. Lost and confused, hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the decimated streets of Baghdad in a desperate struggle for their lives. In documenting the plight of the lions, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD raises questions about the true meaning of liberation – can it be given or is it earned only through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the end, is it truly better to die free than to live life in captivity?

Based on a true story, VAUGHAN and artist NIKO HENRICHON (Barnum!) have created a unique and heartbreaking window into the nature of life during wartime, illuminating this struggle as only the graphic novel can.

Pagātne atkārtojas!

P.S. Nebiju gaidījis tik bēdīgas beigas.

***************************************

Blaire and Travis are two volunteers, a teacher and a nurse. They arrive at St. Sebastian orphanage with hope to help children unwanted by others and to improve their day to day lives. Already the beginning isn’t telling you anything good when both our main characters see their home for the next year for the first time. Travis jokingly compares it to the home of Dracula; St. Sebastian also don’t have enough workers and/or money to satisfy their needs.

The story is mainly from POV of Blaire; therefore also find out more about her past than about Travis’. Although she doesn’t have to worry that she might run out of money herself, but suddenly the orphanage make her to remember suppressed memories of a car crash in which she lost both of her parents and barely survived herself. And besides that she was also bullied in the school and wasn’t the popular girl.

The author masterfully uses the language and all kinds of elements to create the right atmosphere and vibe. When it’s needed, something creeks or clatters; when you want to leave, a sudden and heavy snow storm confines you in.

While Travis explains away everything weird and odd thing and tries to find logic and rationality behind it, Blaire’s senses and perception is much more acute. The first significant things that she notices is in the photographs, the longer you stay at the orphanage the more twisted your face is in each new photo.  Plus, some of the children are acting quite weird and even bone chilling. I only can say that I’m glad that I will have no need to go to the basement anytime soon.

And lastly a bit creepy rhyme:

‘’Mommy, mommy take me home, far away from the unknown. Pick me up and fly away into the light of another day. Rescue me from the halls of the haunted, the desperate, the evil, unloved, and unwanted.’’

Nelson DeMille – Plum Island (John Corey #1)

945092

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Taking the best elements from two of his most outstanding bestsellers, The Gold Coast and The General’s Daughter, Nelson DeMille combines the breathless suspense of an expertly wrought murder mystery with his wry perspective on a peculiarly American social scene to deliver an enthralling and compelling story. Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide detective John Corey convalesces in the Long Island township of Southold, home to farmers, fishermen — and at least one killer. Tom and Judy Gordon, a young, attractive couple Corey knows, have been found on their patio, each with a bullet in the head. The local police chief, Sylvester Maxwell, wants Corey’s big-city expertise, but Maxwell gets more than he bargained for. The early signs point to a burglary gone wrong. But because the Gordons were biologists at Plum Island, the offshore animal disease research site rumored to be involved in germ warfare, it isn’t long before the media is suggesting that the Gordons stole something very deadly. Suddenly a local double murder becomes a crime with national and worldwide implications. John Corey doesn’t like mysteries, which is why he likes to solve them. His investigations lead him into the lore, legends, and ancient secrets of northern Long Island — more deadly and more dangerous than he could ever have imagined. During his journey of discovery, he meets two remarkable women, Detective Beth Penrose and Mayflower descendant Emma Whitestone, both of whom change his life irrevocably. Ultimately, through his understanding of the murders, John Corey comes to understand himself. Fast-paced and atmospheric, marked by entrancing characters, incandescent storytelling, and brilliant comic touches, Plum Island is Nelson DeMille at his thrill-inducing best.

***************************************

Tony and Judy Gordons, husband and wife, and also two scientists are found dead shot in the head near their house, and the bullets themselves have drowned to never be found again. Their workplace Plum Island attracts the attention of the big boys (FBI and CIA). On this island deadly diseases both for animals and humans are studied, and because of that everyone’s first thought why Gordons were killed is worst imaginable.

NYPD homicide detective John Corey for a while have been recovering on the Long Island after being very close to the other side after GSW during the work. Because during this short time on the island John had befriended Gordons and their isn’t much else for John to do, local police chief Maxwell hires him as a consultant to this case. Although the consultant job for good or worse doesn’t last too long, that doesn’t prevent John from finding who killed his friends.

John could be called an anti-hero. He is not shy to break and bypass few rules if the ending result and the cause are worth it. Plus, John has a good sense of humor and also he has a habit to make jokes and sarcastic remarks not only when it’s appropriate but also when it’s not. Despite all that and his status in the investigation John finds an ally in the detective Elizabeth Penrose. Inevitably romance finds its way into the plot, moreover with a relative triangle.

If you want to read a crime novel with an ambiguous main character/investigator then Plum Island might be for you. And if that doesn’t convince you then maybe pirates and hidden treasure will. : )

Joprojām ik pa brīdim kāds labs komentārs no Heizalas puses no kāda nezināma brīža nākotnē. : )

***************************************

Marko and Alana still must worry about their and the Hazel’s safety but now they are not alone. Together with them are their daughter’s grandparents, and that creates some interesting situations as they try to comprehend their son’s choices.

In the first moments Marko’s mother with magic sends away Izabel, ghost/Hazel’s babysitter, to a planet, and then the resultant adventures because of that; a special plus to the giant.

For the time we get to see Gwendolyn and it’s clear that she isn’t happy that Marko left her and won’t accept that. We still see few comments from Hazel from unknown time in the future. : )

I liked the flashback of how Marko and Alana met and eventually ran away. The art probably would be even more impressive in a physical edition.

Joseph Fink, Jeffrey Cranor – Welcome to Night Vale

23129410

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

From the creators of the wildly popular Welcome to Night Valepodcast comes an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is also a poignant look at the ways in which we all struggle to find ourselves…no matter where we live.

Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.

Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked “King City” by a mysterious man in a tan jacket holding a deer skin suitcase. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can’t seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels.

Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton’s son, Josh, is moody and also a shape shifter. And lately Diane’s started to see her son’s father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.

Diane’s search to reconnect with her son and Jackie’s search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: “King City”. It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries, and their futures…if they can ever find it.

Welcome to Night Vale brīžiem ir gan komfortabls bezsakars, gan dažu šermuļu uzdzenošs.

***************************************

Jackie Fierro runs a pawn shop where for everything she offers the same price $11 or something less usual. Jackie has a feeling that she has been in charge of shop for decades if not even a good century but at the same time Jackie is only 19 years old. While Jackie’s friends are getting older she always shrugs off the question of when she will just turn twenty. The time in Night Vale really goes differently. Things get more strange when a man possibly named Evan, that most after seeing him can’t remember, gives her a paper with two words on it – King City. Whatever Jackie would do, throw it away as far as she can or anything else, the paper always returns in her hand.

Another person trying to find out more about King City is Diane Crayton, but for Diane the reasons differ. Diane one day starts to see her shapeshifting son Josh’s father Troy, who left them soon after he was born, but every time Diane wants to stop him and talk to him, he manages to get away. The relationship between mother and son cannot be called as something very good, and you can sympathize with the mother when Josh starts to ask questions more and more about his father.

After few time running into each other Jackie and Diane decide to team up in both – trying to understand what is King City and trying to get there. It might sound weird but if I had to choose where to live between Night Vale and King City, I would choose Night Vale. At least while Troy is at King City; one man with many I, literally a split personalities.

Welcome to Night Vale sometimes is comfortable nonsense combined with alien nonsense. A place where being an intern at the radio station or going to library can end up with your death. If you get out of a library alive you definitely can consider yourself a very lucky person. If someone says that you have a migraine, but your head doesn’t hurt, check your neck, you might find a scorpion! Also, please don’t ignore the faceless lady in the attick! :D And, whatever you do, DON’T touch pink plastic flamingoes!

It took me a while to get used to the style of writing and language, and the parts with Cecil and his radio show really helped; reminded me the podcast. I could say that those parts are one of the best thing in the whole book but it’s good that it’s not all the time because that would be a different book, better to restart listening to podcast. If you haven’t heard anything about Welcome to Night Vale I would recommend to listen to few episodes before reading this book.

And, of course, all hail the mighty Glow Cloud!

A Wrinkle in Time varētu nebūt priekš pašiem mazākajiem, bet sākot ar MG domājas gan.

***************************************

One thing I liked was the introduction by the author which also recorded the book briefly mentioning the hardships to publish this book either because children wouldn’t understand it and because A Wrinkle in Time was majorly different from her previous ones. I can’t judge how big the differences are but overall I liked it. Another plus was the character’s Whatsit voice.

So, Meg and Charles’s father has been missing since their early childhood and the family receives very little explanations what had happened. One very windy in which no one could fell asleep begins not only their father’s rescue operation but also exciting fight against darkness and It. It even until the end remained a very mysterious evil character.

Meg and Charles aren’t alone in these adventures, and receive help from their friend Calvin, three bizarre ladies with very uncommon names (one already mentioned) and creatures from the good side. Soon it becomes clear that this rescue and fight won’t be that easy and it’s not going to end with saving their father.

I’m hoping that in a short time I will manage to continue this series. Maybe someone knows does it matter in which order you read this and author’s other series that overlaps with Time Quintet. A Wrinkle in time might not be meant for the youngest audience but probably from MG or so.

Varētu domāt, ka sērijai būtu pienācis loģisks gals, tomēr tā nebūt nava. Uzzināsim kas tur īsti bija ar to uzrakstu debesīs un vēl šo to.

Jāpiekrīt viedoklim, ka dažādo spēju kļuvis par daudz; pats vien izlasu spēju aprakstu un īpašo nosaukumu skipoju.

Chew world’s medicine and things you can do with enough resources is something amazing because every important character that was heavily injured after disastrous fight with Vampire, and now they live with unusual prosthetics.

I didn’t thought that the big fight between Tony and Vampire would be in this volume. At least we have a good reason why Poyo had to die; he is condemned to return to hell but no need to fear that it might hard for him there. :D

You might think that this could be a logical end to the series but no. We still have to find out about the weird sky writing and few other things.

I have to agree to the opinion that there are a bit too many food powers; personally I just read their description and skip the special word.
