Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

Viena no tām grāmatām, kuras sākums un pirmā puse pārspēj noslēgumu.

***************************************

Humans are using judging by the technologies once a very powerful civilizations called Heechee space ships and their wormhole/tunnel system to gain resource, knowledge about the Universe and for simple travel. But as the arrival at the other end might be very dangerous because many tunnels haven’t been explored yet, there are many casualties. So our main character Rob isn’t that excited about his first trip. However the reward is proportional to the risk, and might very well happen that when you return you have become so rich that there is no need to work again.

To everyone Heechee is one big mystery, no one can tell what happened to them or why they left so many things behind. Another unanswered question is for what purpose exactly Heeche created and used these tunnels; also even there is a lot they people don’t know what their ships can do. So to not endanger yourself and those with you, it’s safer not to touch what you don’t know it might do. And seeing the seats in the space ships you can tell that Heechee didn’t belong to humanoids.

The conversations between Rob and his psychologist (AI) were quite interesting. Unfortunately only after finishing the book and reading other opinions about the book on Goodreads I found out that there were two timelines. I believe it would have helped to realise that sooner, because many times I wondered, where the heck that psychologist came from.

Good and exciting idea with unpleasant characters. One of those books in which the beginning and the first half were better than the ending.
