Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Every crime scene tells a story. Some keep you awake at night. Others haunt your dreams. The grisly display homicide cop Jane Rizzoli finds in Boston’s Chinatown will do both.

In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, her head nearly severed. Two strands of silver hair—not human—cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make the startling discovery: that this violent death had a chilling prequel.

Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. But one woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil.

Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning—and a swift, avenging blade.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

In a Chinese town on roof found woman’s body dressed all in black with a cut off hand brings up painful memories. 19 years ago in a restaurant Red Phoenix not that far from the current crime scene happened a real massacre. After the official version the restaurants cook Mr. Wu just lost his mind and shot everyone in the restaurant before killing himself. But as closer Jane Rizzoli looks into that day’s event the more doubtful that version seems.

Another approach to investigate this case is to look into an unusual fact. Two years before the massacre and also two years after it daughters of two different victims went missing. The girls didn’t know each other but what could link them? Were their more disappearances? These and many more questions torment Rizzoli, her colleague Barry Frost and the new guy detective Johnny Tam.

The Chinese town is a world of its own in which others don’t wander in just because and where the locals stick together, gossip and seemingly know everything. Maybe because of that (but not to the detectives) a possible appearance of a mythical creature, the protector of the good, the Monkey  King. Rizzoli’s logical mind tries to throw such thoughts away but even for her that isn’t easy. No matter who actually it is, his fighting and sword skills and the speed is something out of this world!

In this book Maura Isles is shown very little. She has to endure ill-will from her colleagues because she insisted on her principles and chose to tell the truth in the court room and to cover a cop who beat a young man which later resulted into his death.

The truth about what and why happened in the Red Phoenix made me read few sentences more than once, and to ask myself, how a person can do something like that to another human being?!
