Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

After losing his wife after hard battle with cancer, lawyer and writer Penn Cage decides to return to his hometown Natchez, Mississippi, together with his together with his daughter Annie to get himself in proper mindset and with the help of his parents to help Annie to get accustomed with the loss of mother in a different environment.

The news about the famous author returning home flies around like a wildfire, and there’s very little of the piece he was expecting.

Interestingly that the first journalist (Caitlin Masters) he agrees to give the interview isn’t a complete stranger because she sat right next to him in the flight to home. To the question, how is the situation in the south with racism, without much thought Penn mentions a 30 year old (1968) murder of Del Payton (African American) that went unsolved in the peak time of human rights movement.

Even in his craziest dreams Penn didn’t thought what kind of frenzy his statement will create, and how prominent and influential people this murder case and its burying involves.

Already in the same morning when the article is published Penn is visited by Del’s mother asking him to at least try finding who killed her son and bring them to justice, instead as back in 1968 when as the cause of death in Del’s death certificate was an accident. But before Penn can undertake such a task together with his father he has to settle a delicate and very expensive blackmail.

Despite the first impression Penn quite quickly finds a common language with Caitlin. It’s difficult to say if without each other (the teamwork) there would be much hope to success. But I have to say that there are plenty of other interested parties that sincerely advise Penn to drop the investigation and are will to go even further than just words. The only complain, which is not even book’s fault, was that I missed a real fear and concern about Penn’s life because I knew that this book is part of the series. Big thanks to the narrator for the experience! : )

Death. Murder. Blackmail. I love this kind of suspense/thrillers. The Quiet Game, though there were some issues, has a nice feel to it. I agree, I prefer to feel it when the main character is in danger, too. Do you think because you listened to it that the emotions were not as connected for you?
