Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

Enoch Wallace is an ageless hermit, striding across his untended farm as he has done for over a century, still carrying the gun with which he had served in the Civil War. But what his neighbors must never know is that, inside his unchanging house, he meets with a host of unimaginable friends from the farthest stars.

More than a hundred years before, an alien named Ulysses had recruited Enoch as the keeper of Earth’s only galactic transfer station. Now, as Enoch studies the progress of Earth and tends the tanks where the aliens appear, the charts he made indicate his world is doomed to destruction. His alien friends can only offer help that seems worse than the dreaded disaster. Then he discovers the horror that lies across the galaxy…

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

Enoch Wallaceis responsible for the order and that everything would go smoothly in a special station. He is its only worker there which is neither completely bad nor good. Enoch as he simplifies himself compares his workplace with the train station and that the one he operates is only a short stop (at least for their identity and mind) for aliens who visit him there and they are not allowed to leave the station.

It may seem unbelievable that anyone is capable to hold on to a job more than hundred years and still (be and) look like a 30 year old but for Enoch it’s no trouble. During these long years he has managed to befriend some of the alien visitors.

The story mainly happens in and around the station, and although Enoch doesn’t have colleagues he isn’t lonely or without any contact with the outside world. There is Lucy Fisher, a neighbor girl who despite no vision and hearing possibly feels and senses more than some with them. There is a mailman who from all of surrounding citizens (not mentioning Lucy) has accepted Enoch as he is without bothering to ask how Enoch doesn’t get older. But because of these unknowns and mystery about him, it has created rumors and crazy stories.

The uniqueness has attracted the attention of the government and secret agencies (with which the book actually starts). You could say that their activity and inconsideration serves as the catalyst for more than few problems. Of course Enoch had had to deal with such before, but not on such a big scale. As the station on Earth is part of a bigger universal project, but not everyone in the Universe is willing to support the expansion in that way, especially involving such primitive beings that still have wars between each other. I should add that the liable organization in this case hasn’t explored the whole Universe and discovered every intelligent life form there is.

These new mishaps become a huge threat for the existence of Earth’s station. Although there might be enough support for a positive outcome, there is also plenty of the opposition that tries to use the new developments as pretence.

I little positive surprise was that there wasn’t an emphasis on religion; but what I can reveal is that there is a spiritual force(entity) which has an important role to keep balance.
