Cormac McCarthy – The Road (audiobook)

Grāmatas apraksts no Goodreads/Synopsis from Goodreads:

A searing, post apocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

Mana recenzija (pārdomas)/My (thoughts) review

***************************************

The boy and The man, son and his father (no names are given) together travel down the road veering off of it as less as possible. Their relationship given also the circumstances are very close, almost like they might be the last persons on the whole planet. They rarely loose the sight of each and with combined effort try to resolve all sorts of problems – like with their safety and food – but that’s nothing if you have such a great chance to get closer with your son/father + occasionally sleeping under the starry skies (who knows how many!).

Unfortunately the road to the coast leads them through ruined, burned and in many other ways damaged country. It’s not revealed what exactly happened but it is clear that it had to be big. What I really liked was the relationship between father and son; the only little fault and what didn’t like was that in the dialogues some phrases were repeated a bit too much, although maybe appropriate to the world and situation.

Both of them are very cautious towards any stranger and that’s with its reason because the Boy and the Man are the good guys, but there are many (and like most) that aren’t. The psychological pressure and also fears lies heavy on both of them, the same for the child as for the adult – constant worries about resources, food, the Boy’s safety, what will the future hold. Their situation is unenviable, I can surely say that I probably wouldn’t last long.

Maybe because the previous audio book before this one that I listened was The Postman, but The Road seemed to have some similarities; also I was reminded of other stories were the road and the trip on it is a major part of the plot.

The mood in The Road isn’t the brightest one there is but that not in any way makes this book bad; also not everything is sad or depressive like what I already sad about the Boy’s and the Man’s relationship. What I would like to highlight was the Boy’s kind heart and generosity almost against everyone they met, also against those on four legs and even if the father said otherwise [this sentence doesn’t rule out the one about caution : )].

This time I don’t want to reveal anything that happens at the end :D, I will say only that I have concern about the Boy’s decision there.
